Coccygeal pain

Coccygeal pain or coccydinia

This is a pain at the very base of the spine, below the sacrum.

It may just come on , or sometimes a fall or pregnancy will start it off.

Usually it does get better on it's own , but it may take up to 18 months to settle down.

The pain may be worse when sitting , so a cushion or sodft chairs may help.

The first treatment is to try pain killers and or or Non steroidal anti inflammotories (NSAI's)

Injections of local anaesthetic and or steroid will often help and more than one injection might be required. Some doctors like to try a series.

If all else fails an operation to remove the 'tip of the tailbone' or a coccygectomy can be quite helpful , but it doesn't work for everyone.
